live report ~ Satsuki & auncia: July 4, 2009
Los Angeles, CA - 2nd Street Jazz Bar

2nd Street Jazz Bar in Little Tokyo has become something of a "staple venue" for JRock events in Los Angeles. It’s not unusual to hear local Japanese rock bands perform on a monthly basis. The venue is small and intimate, providing for an extremely personal experience with the band or artist performing.
During Anime Expo, ex-RENTRER EN SOI vocalist Satsuki performed a rare live in 2nd Street Jazz Bar, opened by visual kei band auncia, who are just in the process of gaining recognition for their own music. auncia opened the live to extreme fervor. Their music is solidly catchy and as described in our interview with them earlier that day, "positive rock." It infused everyone with a good, happy feeling early on.

To give you an idea of just how intimate this venue is, auncia, once they were finished performing, mingled among the fans, giving everyone clearance to freely approach them and tell them in their own words how entertaining the live was.

This was a small crowd, closed in a very private setting, so fans were really given an up-and-close personal experience with Satsuki. He performed admirably. In our interview he had said of his lives, "fans can release their stress." True to his vision, Satsuki’s music was captivating and enchanting for all who heard. Also in that interview he noted that he put special emphasis on vocals. This was especially evident in the song Veil of Maria where his vocals took on an ethereal, unearthly tone. One of the more noteworthy moments of this live is when Satsuki got behind a piano for In a Lucid Dream. Carried along the haunting melody, his stirring vocals hushed the crowd into a mesmerized silence.
In the end we were all treated to a taste of what Satsuki had labored over for so long. Rather than hard and aggressive, he had taken a route more along an acoustic edge with hypnotizing, wistful melodies creating a harmonious atmosphere with the fans.
Since this was such an intimate setting, it would be hard to duplicate this experience, but for those lucky few who happened to be present it’s an experience that will not soon be forgotten.
