LIVE REPORT ~ Peelander-Z: May 17 2008
Anime Central Chicago, IL

Whether or not you want to believe
that Peelander-Z comes from a
different planet—Planet Peelander,
to be exact—their live show is something completely out of this world. They don’t just play their music: they put on a memorable live show.
The first thing that stood out about Peelander-Z as they came onstage were their garish costumes, with each member of the band clad in the colors of their names: Peelander Green, Peelander Blue, Peelander Red, and Peelander Yellow. However, once the show started, it was clear that even without their bright colors, Peelander-Z was more than capable of grabbing the crowd’s attention. In no time at all, the band hand the audience chanting “Mad Tiger” right along with them. Drumsticks hitting pots were soon thrown into the mix, as people near the stage were given them as makeshift instruments, and were even pulled onto stage. Once members of the audience filled the stage, Peelander-Z got even crazier.

Twice the band cleared an aisle in the middle of the fans, once to play limbo with a piece of yellow rope, and another time to “bowl.” In addition to these stunts, the members of Peelander-Z spent a good portion of their show crowd-surfing and stage diving. P. Blue went so far as to use a black pad as a surf board as he paddled out into the sea of people, and then stood up, quite literally surfing on the hands that supported him.
Peelander-Z gave us both surf and turf, too! We got a little taste of “turf” with Medium Rare Steak. Again fans climbed onstage, this time to join a Peelander train that went across stage, through the audience, and back onstage. Then, in an extravagant finale, the members of Peelander-Z handed off their instruments to people from the audience, as they posed, jumped around, and surfed the crowd. And then, somehow, everything ended up in it’s proper place—instruments with the band onstage, and the audience on the floor. Peelander-Z bid us farewell and left the stage for the next act.
Even if you don't know how they like their steak, Peelander-Z puts on a hell of a show, one that involves everyone in the audience. ACen will likely find it difficult to forget the antics of Peelander-Z, as would almost anyone who’s seen a live show like that.
