MYM is the vocalist of the band GaGaalinG, as well as a model for popular Japanese fashion label, h.NAOTO. After an autograph session at PMX, she sat down with us to answer a few questions about GaGaalinG and her thoughts on fashion. This we also got on video, so we encourage you to watch that, as well! What does the name GaGaalinG mean?
GaGaalinG is named for the astronaut, Yurin Gagarin, the first man in space. Yeah, it has a space angle.
How did you get involved in GaGaalinG?
I wanted to start a band so I started going to different live houses. I met someone who played guitar. So I gave a demo tape to him because I wanted to make music with him. It just worked out that he was able to find other people who wanted to be in the band as well. The timing was perfect.
What images come to your head when you create a song?
The members of GaGaalinG consist of a lot of different generations. You know, 40 generation, 30, 20…So they all like different kinds of music. We just kind of mix it together and that’s GaGaalinG.
How would you describe GaGaalinG’s music?
I want people to see our sound, our fashion, everything. From these things they can get a sense of our music.
Who are your favorite artists?
Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, Linkin Park.
Have you been to any of their concerts?
Avril Lavigne.
How was that?
(in English) Wonderful. Awesome!
Do any of those artists lend an influence to GaGaalinG’s sound?
I think our band is in a new category. It’s a mixture of styles, like the world of Evanescence, the style of Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne’s pop style, the dark, loud style of Korn. We kind of mix everything.
What is your favorite fashion style / trend?
Gothic punk rock.
How about brand?
h. NAOTO!! (points to herself – wearing h. NAOTO clothes)
Do you follow fashion magazines?
Yes! KERA!
What do you think of the popularity of Japanese fashion catching on in the USA?
Oh it’s great! I think Americans express themselves very well. You know Lolita fashion is originally from Europe. Like corsets. Foreigners can even dress better than the Japanese, so I think it’s a great influence.
Will GaGaalinG perform in the USA?
Oh I hope! I wish! I’d like to have a concert here.
What have you found interesting about the USA since being here?
Ahh well I was surprised because everything is so big here! But I think people here are very open. They take care of themselves really well, like their personalities and their expressions. I think that is very nice.
What would you like to say to readers?
I want to come back to America and hold a concert. So please come see GaGaalinG. I want you guys to feel our sound, our fashion, everything.
