interview ~ m.o.v.e: May 10, 2009
ACen - Chicago, IL

The members of m.o.v.e are no strangers to playing shows in the US. This year, they made an appearance at Anime Central in Chicago, IL. Motsu and Yuri took some time out of their schedules to answer a few of our questions on the last day of the convention.
What music did you listen to growing up? What inspired you to do what you do now?
Motsu: Japanese pop. I worked at a lot of music clubs and cafes growing up, and liked a lot of the music I would hear in there. I really like a lot of old school hip-hop and techno now. Pop, too.
Yuri: A lot of traditional JPop, and stuff like Madonna, too. A lot of stuff my mom liked.
What is the process for writing and recording the music?
Motsu: We'll talk with T (Kimura) and program the computer. It's pretty standard for us.
What is the differences between a convention and a regular live show?
Yuri: A convention is kind of like a big party. Everyone is there to see different bands and watch anime, just have fun. We can actually see the fans' eyes, and see all the fun they're having. In Japan the fans are just there for us, and they're much more aggressive, lots of pushing and fighting to get up close to us.
What album are you listening to right now?
Motsu: I'm listening to a few bands, some kind of obscure Japanese music you probably haven't heard of.
Yuri: Well, Humanizer (our album) of course, and a lot of Britney Spears. (laughs)
If you could play with any musician right now, who would it be?
Motsu: I think it'd be Run DMC. I'd love to do that.
What is the ideal enviroment for you to write music in? How do you like to do it?
Motsu: I love to be in the studio, with a nice keyboard and two computer screens in front of me.
Yuri: A lot of times I really like to sit in cafes with a little notebook and write lyrics down there.
Where do you get your clothes? I LOVE your outfits!
(both laugh)
Motsu: Most of this is actually stuff I'm designing, I'm currently working on my own clothing line and designing a lot for it.
Yuri: I love a little shop in Tokyo that I frequent a lot. You can actually see it in one of Madonna's videos, and she has been known to shop there a lot when she visits Japan. I simply adore the clothes there.
Any messages for your fans?
Motsu: Please bring us back to the US! We love it here, we hope to come at least 3 times to the US next year. Wish us luck!
