Review ~ Dir en grey
Dozing Green
Dozing Green: The song starts out with slow eerie synthesizer then blasts it’s way into the Dir en grey sound we know and love. With a strong drum-line from Shinya, the song stays on a steady pace through out, not getting wild like in their former songs on the Marrow of a Bone album. The guitar riffs give the song a creepy feel, while the lyrics and sound of Kyo singing brings sadness and longing to it. The sad lyrics sound as if he is talking to a lost lover. The almost screaming at the end of the song fits, as he seems to be crying out through his pain. This new sound for Dir en grey is definitely a good one.
Hydra -666-: This is a remake of an older song of theirs, but this sounds nothing like the old one. It, too, sticks with the theme of this single with his eerie sound. It has a slow intro with Kyo humming and softly singing, then quickly shifts to screaming and fast-paced riffs--it's certainly one to get the adrenaline running. Even though Kyo is back to his screaming self again, it fits in with the context of the song. The lyrics sound as if directed to another artist or someone of fame, asking them to re-think their fame, for they are no longer the person they once were. Again, another step in the right direction for the new “experimental” sound of Dir en grey.
Agitated Screams of Maggots (live): The live version of this song starts out with Kyo showing off his amazing vocal abilities. He is mostly playing with his range for about a minute, with a creepy beautiful sound. But it flows well with the actual song, setting it up for the awesome explosion that happens when Kaoru and Die join in with their guitars and Shinya with his drums, Toshiya’s bass line bringing up the rear. With how angry the lyrics for this song are, it only makes sense for Kyo to scream them. This is not a recreation of a song, but a featured song from their Marrow of a Bone album.
As a whole, this single is quite good. Hopefully it’s a good preview of what might be coming up from the band. As I’ve said, the new sound has an eerie feel to it, but it’s something we’ve sampled before in a few other Dir en grey songs. Whatever this new sound is, it’s definitely Dir en grey and it’s definitely good.
