LIVE REPORT ~ Anti Feminism: December 9, 2007
Studio B ~ Brooklyn, NY
It was about 10:30pm when Anti-Feminism finally made their way to the stage. The crowd was still chattering, basking in the cheer that Hagakure left them with. Anti-Feminism would change the night into a whole other madness.
The band members walk out into their respective spots as Kenzi, the vocalist, walks toward the center of the stage at the chair that was placed there. Impulsively, he stood on the chair and pointed at the crowd, glaring into the shadowed faces. He crouched down and jumped. Furious music filled the air. The songs blurred in a flurry of guitar riffs and screams and head-banging.
The crowd changed from their earlier furi moves with Kaya to massive head-banging that left only flying hair and arms raised up to the vision. Catcalls of “I wanna see some pants fall!” to Kenzi’s “Okay” spelled out the rest of the show.
With a short—“Hey. Alright, talk in Japanese ii ka?” (Talk in Japanese, okay?)—from Kenzi, they went into Ochikobore. The scaling guitar riff and screaming sounds filled the venue as Kenzi flung himself across the small stage. Taking the earlier comment to mind, he unzipped his ripped jeans, shoved his mic into his pants, and stroked himself to the crowds urging. And the crowd, who’d earlier danced in good natured fun, were now making their way into a full blown mosh pit, pushing up against each other with furious one-minded reason. To add into the madness, the vocalist threw water at the crowd and their frenzied movements.
As Kurage came on, Kenzi stood at the center of the stage, legs apart and bracing. With his red collared shirt flapping open, his hands gripped his leopard print tie, dragging it back until the cloth pulled tight against his throat. He was choking himself… and the fans loved it.
Near the end of their set, Kenzi approached the edge of the stage, yelling out, “Go back! Abunai!” In his hands, he held a bowl, and with the help of the crowd, he was pulled down into the crowd. Pushing his way past the fans anxiously gripping his clothing, wanting to tear away any piece they could get, he worked his way to the back of the audience. He upended the bowl on the ground and suddenly, he was on the ground. In his bowl had been handfuls of pushpins and now he was throwing himself on the ground covered in those pushpins. Security came in like shadows, escorting him back to the stage. There was a shocked silence before everyone started scrambling for a souvenir pushpin. Later, I would hear fans wishing for one with a little bit of Kenzi blood on it.
They walked off stage not long after, ignoring the calls from the audience. Encore calls echoed off the walls for several long moments. Kenzi was quick to answer. He strode onto stage into a welcoming cheer from fans, picked up the mic and yelled and promptly walked off stage again. What an encore it was.
Hagakure and Anti-Feminism were two incredibly different bands. But that night, none of it had mattered. The crowd was small and despite that, just as crazy as any crowd of 1,000 or more. It was spectacular, the joy of Hagakure, and the madness of Anti-Feminism. Omoshiroi ne?
